Monkfield Locusts are a popular livefood choice for reptiles, including bearded dragons, geckos and other insect-eating species. They are nutritious, active and help encourage natural hunting and feeding behaviour.

Available in a range of sizes to suit different reptiles and life stages.

Suitable for reptiles, amphibians, arachnids, birds and some small mammals.

Key Benefits
  • Nutritious livefood for reptiles – Locusts provide a natural source of animal protein and encourage normal feeding and hunting behaviour in insect-eating reptiles.
  • Encourages natural enrichment – Their movement helps stimulate a reptile's natural prey drive, providing both physical activity and mental stimulation during feeding.
  • Suitable for a wide range of reptiles – Available in several life stages and sizes, making it easier to select appropriately sized prey for everything from smaller juveniles through to larger adult reptiles.
  • Soft-bodied and easy to feed – Locusts have a relatively soft body compared with some other feeder insects, making them a popular livefood option for many commonly kept reptiles.
  • Convenient pre-packed format – Supplied ready to store and feed, with different sizes available to suit your reptile's requirements.
  • Ideal as part of a varied diet – Locusts can be rotated with other appropriate feeder insects to provide dietary variety. They can also be gut-loaded and dusted with suitable calcium or vitamin supplements before feeding.

Care Guidance

Keep locusts at approximately 15–18°C, away from bright light, in a smooth-sided, well-ventilated container.

For best results, provide adequate ventilation and avoid allowing excessive moisture to build up. Locusts can be gut-loaded with suitable fresh food or a dedicated insect gut-loading diet before being offered to your reptile.

Remove any uneaten livefood from the enclosure where appropriate and always follow the feeding requirements of the individual reptile species.

Live Food in Cold Weather

During cold weather, every effort is made to ensure live food arrives as warm and active as possible. Delivery vehicles are heated and heat packs may be added to livefood orders during particularly cold conditions.

Despite this, livefood may occasionally arrive appearing inactive or lifeless.

Locusts and many other commonly sold feeder insects are cold-blooded and cannot regulate their own body temperature. When exposed to low temperatures, they can enter a dormant state in which their activity and bodily processes slow considerably. This does not necessarily mean the insects have died.

If your livefood arrives cold or inactive:

  1. Remove the packs from the outer packaging and lay them out individually so fresh air can circulate around them.
  2. Leave them at normal room temperature, approximately 18–25°C. Do not place them on a radiator, heat mat or underneath a heat lamp. Warming livefood too quickly can kill the insects.
  3. Allow several hours for them to recover. Activity should gradually increase as the insects return to room temperature.

Do not attempt to rapidly heat cold livefood. Slow, natural warming at room temperature gives the insects the best chance of recovering fully.
