How clicker training works
The click tells your pet that they have performed the correct behaviour and that a reward is coming.
Before using the clicker to teach a particular behaviour, help your pet learn what the sound means:
1. Choose a quiet area with minimal distractions.
2. Press the clicker once.
3. Immediately give your pet a small treat or another suitable reward.
4. Repeat this several times over a few short sessions.
Once your pet begins to associate the sound with a reward, use the click at the exact moment they perform the behaviour you want to encourage.
Every click should be followed by a reward while your pet is learning. The click marks the behaviour but does not replace the reward itself.
Training guidance
Keep training sessions short, calm and enjoyable. A few minutes of successful training is usually more useful than continuing until your pet becomes tired, distracted or frustrated.
Use one clear click to mark each successful behaviour. Avoid repeatedly clicking without providing a reward, as this may weaken the meaning of the sound.
Choose rewards that are appropriate for your pet. These may include small treats, play, praise or access to something the pet enjoys.
